Question by : Trouble breathing at night.?

Hello,
I’ve searched around and haven’t exactly found an answer to my situation. Hopefully I haven’t overlooked it and I apologize if I have.

I’m having trouble sleeping at night. I’ll wake up 2 – 4 times a night having a fairly difficult time breathing and coughing some. I’ll also sometimes be sweating, even though the room is cool. A couple puffs of an albuterol inhaler fixes the problem instantly. The mornings are rough as well. About 45 minutes after waking up, everything is fine. I maybe need 1 or 2 uses of the inhaler during the day, but it is never because of an “attack.” I’ll have a slightly difficult time breathing and could deal with it, but use the inhaler before it gets worse. The closest I’ve been to asthmatic is “allergy induced asthma” and I maybe used the inhaler 3 times a year before recently.

I went to the doctor on Monday (it is now Friday). She told me that my lungs sounded clear and that I have a sinus infection. I’ve been on anti-biotics since then and felt worse during the day and nights haven’t gotten any better. Although I have felt better today.

Is it possible that I have a sinus infection (as in, could one cause trouble breathing in the chest and in such a manner that an inhaler helps) and it will all go away at the end of my 10 day treatment, or could there be something else going on?

I forgot to add that I have been sneezing a lot, both at home and at work.
I can’t figure out how to reply, so I’ll comment this way. I understand how this appears to possibly be sleep apnea, but would you be able to instantly (within 3 to 5 seconds) fix sleep apnea with an albuterol inhaler?
I recently purchased a Vicks Vaporizer for use at night. This has helped tremendously. I don’t have near as much trouble breathing at night when it is on. I think the Vicks medicine in it is really helping. I feel slightly better, but I am still having breathing problems.

you should sleep with your back and head elevated 30-45degrees if it doesnt work see a doctor you might have sleep apnea and its dangerous

I went to the dentist today to have a tooth pulled and cleaning. Since my husband was laid off and I am self employed, we do not have insurance at this time. So, I paid $ 260 for all that. While talking to the dentist, I told him about all of my medical history including my intestinal surgeries, asthma and allergy to penicillin. After the procedure, he gave me a prescription for an antibiotic and motrin. He said that the antibiotic was for my infection. Well I got the antibiotic prescription filled (not motrin because i already have some) for $ 85. Well when I got home I read the info sheet on the medicine and the warning was that it may cause “FATAL intestinal complications”. The pharmacist says that I can’t return the medicine because I took it home and that the dentist is responsible since I gave him my medical history upfront. Well the dentist basically said that it is my problem not his. Isn’t there something I can do? To add insult to injury, the dentist said “Oh, well you don’t need it anyway.” Really? Why can they just give out prescriptions saying that we need them just to waste our money. What the….
Joel W. … I understand, but I told this man that I had six surgeries on my intestines and that I have artifical small ones so I would need something that would not cause problems. He said that he understood. On the info sheet the pharmacy gave me the warning was big and bold. It says that if you’ve had any intestinal problems you should not take this. Also, from what I know he is a small dentist office with no larger affiliation but I will check. I made sure that he knew because I know that there are a lot of things that I can’t take. I gave him details of my surgical history in full description before he even started the procedure.
If I shouldn’t base my decision on the information provided by the pharmacy, what am I supposed to do? Should I have just taken it and died, then try to do something about it? I mean really?

That was a HUGE oversight on the part of the dentist.

I was overweight since 6th grade, this along with excessive strenuous activity during inclimate weather caused me to develop bronchitis. I recently lost a significant amount of weight after, being shocked into action. Working with a trainer, I lost weight the “right way” quickly and workout daily to keep it off. I did NJROTC in High School and lost weigh then and was able to keep up with the others. Since losing weight now, my “asthma” has given me NO problems. If I can prove it’s not an issues and that it was weight related, will they still take me?

Asthma is the top reason people are turned away from the military. If you don’t have it or it’s gone away then you shouldn’t bring it up. If you go into MEPS and they see you marked “yes” on asthma then you’re done.

For many years now I have had this constant cough, clearing of my throat and my lungs feel pressure. I am 27 and have had the drainage and clearing of my throat since jr high. Back then, my physician couldn’t find out the issue. I have been told that I do not suffer from asthma.

I still clear my throat constantly and have a constant sensation to cough. My lungs feel as though they are 2 balloons being squeezed, but I don’t have a problem breating. I went to my physician very recently and he put me on Astelin, which has seemed to help what i thought was post nasal drip. It hasn’t cleared me up 100% but has helped. He also referred me to a ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist.

The specialist didn’t do any tests that i thought he would. He looked in my ears, nostrils, and looked at my vocal chords while having me make a high pitch noise. He then told me that he can not do anything for me. He informed me that I have swollen vocal chords. And that the nerves on my chords don’t know the difference between moisture or whatever is falling on them and the swollen tissue, so that is causing me to want to clear my throat. So that liquid doesn’t get into my lungs or whatever.

He told me that I need to drink ice water every time I have the urge to clear my throat and I need to do this for 2 weeks. he might as well as told me to hold my breath and never breath again. That is how I feel about not being able to clear my throat. It is a habit and now physically and mentally comforting for me to clear my throat (except it’s very annoying and upsets me very much that this is my daily life). I guess he was implying that if I can make it two weeks without clearing my throat then I am “cured”. He said I DO NOT have post nasal drip. Even though I suffer from all the symptoms and I feel the drainage every single day, every moment of the day going down my throat.

Should I seek a second opinion? Does anyone else suffer from this or know anything about this or what the doctor said?

no i have no had a chest x-ray. my reg doc did have me do a breathing test and i suppose i’ll get my results in a few weeks. it was 8 tries and i couldn’t do what the machine wanted me to do.

also, i didn’t care for this ENT specialist. this was my first time to see him and i could tell when he walked in that he wasn’t my cup of tea. i agree that some doctors do not take the appropriate time with paitients. my co pay is $ 50. which to some may seem very little. i live pay check to pay check, so that is a lot to me. i feel my $ 50 was a huge waste for the bad diagnosis he gave me. basically, i paid $ 10 a minute (out of pocket) to see him. I was in there about 5 min before they sent me on my way. i do like my reg doc though.

my dad and husband both told me i should probably seek a second opinion. just wanted to see what anyone thought or if they have experienced the same symptoms as i do.

for get him. you have to see a real doctor, or like he said, drink ice water. that helps my cough, and i have it too

Hello so here’s the story. My 6 yr old son had came down with what appeared to be a cold of some sort. His symptoms was cough, sore throat, chest congestion, nasal congestion/drainage loss of appetite, fever and he had rash of some small red bumps on his face the and I took him to the DR. I was told he had bronchitis and he was prescribed an antibiotic and put on breathing treatments the DR said the bumps was just some secondary bacterial infection on his skin “maybe” caused from nasal drainage while he slept or something and said the antibiotics would help that as well (he also has “seasonal asthma”) the next day he was already starting to feel much better, more active, no fever at all, I was of course very happy. Well the next day after that he woke up running almost 104 temperature and was wheezing and much more sick so I took him back to the DR. and a chest x-ray showed he had pneumonia, the DR. diagnosed him with Staph Pneumonia he was given an antibiotic shot and was prescribed a 2nd antibiotic to take along with the 1st antibiotic. Well that was on Sept. 11th and now today he is doing MUCH better as far as the cough and other symptoms he hasn’t had any fever in about a week BUT now he has a rash of tiny red bumps that have appeared over his body. They are not puss filled and he says they do not itch I do not know if this is at all related to the other illnesses he recently had or what it might could be. I am going to try to get him an appt. at the DR. tomorrow if the rash is still there I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what this could be. Thanks for advice and opinions!

Definitely have him go back to the doctor. If it is a staph infection, it may not have completely cleared, and you want to take care of that as quickly as possible.

The other thing it could be is a reaction to the antibiotic. My major symptom, when I’m sensitive to medications, is rash. So still take him to the doctor to make sure the staph isn’t still there – or MRSA – but watch him closely when he finishes the antibiotics to see if the rash clears. If you think it’s the medication, definitely make note of it so that he can avoid it in the future.
